Generation No. 1
1. WILLIAM1 SHATTUCK was born 1621 in
England, and died 14 Aug 1672 in Watertown, Massachusetts. He married
SUSANNA UNKNOWN 1642. She died 11 Dec 1686 in Watertown, Massachusetts.
Notes for WILLIAM SHATTUCK:
William Shattuck must have emigrated to
this country while in his minority. Nothing is known of him before his
arrival in this country, but it is thought that he may have come from
either Lancashire, Sommersetshire, or Berkshire. It is also conjectured
that his father might have died on his passage over or shortly thereafter,
and also that he might have been the son of widow Damaris Shattuck, who
was admitted to the church in Salem in 1641. He may have been a brother of
Samuel Shattuck as their ages are close and the names in their families
are similar.[1/8]
Samuel Shattuck is believed to be a son of
Damaris. He was born about 1620 and died in Salem, MA June 6, 1689, age
69. He first joined the Salem church in 1642. Both he and his mother,
widow Damaris, had daughters named Damaris. William, on the other hand,
did not name a daughter Damaris.[1/361]
In the first inventory of estates in
Watertown, taken in 1639, William had 1) "An Homstall of one acre
bounded Southwest with the Common the East with John Clough & the
North with William Perry 2) Three acres of upland bounded the North with
Joseph Morse the South with William Perry the East with John Clough &
the West with the Common".[4/1:66] William had the same holding in
the third inventory, taken in 1646.[4/1:145]
William married about 1642. The Christian
name of his wife was Susanna, but neither her surname, date or place of
birth, nor her parentage are known. Susanna remained a widow about 15
months after his death and married on Nov. 18, 1673 Richard Norcross, who
survived her. She died Dec. 11, 1686. Richard Norcross was the first
grammar school teacher in Watertown.[1/6061] William held several town
offices. In 1652 he was chosen to prosecute the orders about hogs and
fences[2/1:32] and again in 1660.[2/1:64] He was also the surveyor of
highways in 1655, 1664, and 1665.[2/1:42,78,84]
William's occupation was that of a weaver,
and at his death he bequeathed his "loom and its appurtenances"
to his son William. Agriculture also seems to have been a big part of his
life, as it was for many early settlers. He was buried in the old Mount
Auburn Cemetery.[1/5960]
William Shattuck's will was dated Aug. 3
and proved Aug. 29, 1672. In it he mentioned his sons Samuel Church,
Phillip Shattuck, William Shattuck, four small children, two younger sons
Benjamin and Samuel, son John, and wife Susanna. His "loving friends
John Coolidge, Jr. and Samuel Livermore" were to be assistants to his
wife in the execution of the will, which was witnessed by John Coolidge
and John Livermore.[3/4:28] The inventory of the estate was taken August
23, 1672 by John Coolidge, John Livermore, and Thomas Hastings and
amounted to 434.19.11. 200 pounds was in real property, the rest in
personal property, including 103.17.7 1/2 in money.[3/4:31]

Generation No. 2
2. SUSANNA2
SHATTUCK (WILLIAM1) was born 1643 in Watertown, Massachusetts,
and died Aft. 1695 in Marlboro, Massachusetts. She married (1) JOSEPH
MORSE 12 Apr 1661 in Watertown, Massachusetts, son of JOSEPH MORSE and
HESTER PIERCE. He was born 30 Apr 1637 in Watertown, Massachusetts, and
died 1677. She married (2) JOHN FAY 15 Jul 1678 in Watertown,
Massachusetts. He was born 1648 in England, and died 05 Dec 1690 in
Marlboro, Massachusetts. She married (3) THOMAS BRIGHAM 30 Jul 1695, son
of THOMAS BRIGHAM and MERCY HURD. He was born Abt. 1640 in Cambridge,
Massachusetts, and died 25 Nov 1716 in Marlboro, Massachusetts.
Notes for SUSANNA SHATTUCK:
Susan "Susanna" Shattuck who was
the widow of Joseph Morse married John Fay as her second husband after
John Fay's first wife, Mary Brigham, died. Susan already had 7 children by
Morse, and John Fay's 4 children, and gave birth to 4 more children by
John Fay. After John Fay's death, Susan married as her third husband,
Thomas Brigham, who was a brother of John Fay's first wife, Mary Brigham.
It is interesting to record that from Susan's last marriage, one of her
descendants [actually it was her husband Thomas' brother Samuel] was Peter
Bent Brigham who left a sum of $1,000,000 which was not to be spent until
25 years after his death. By this time the fund had grown to $2,000,000
and was used to build the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital, a world famous
medical research hospital connected with Harvard Medical School in Boston,
Mass.

published in 1862: 1) Susan's marriage date to Thomas Brigham of July
30,1695, and 2) fact that Susan's father was William Shattuck of
Watertown, Massachusetts, b. 1643.
Notes for JOHN FAY:
John Fay embarked May 30, 1656, at
Gravesend, England, and arrived in Boston on June 27, 1656, at the age of
8 years on the Speedwell (sister ship of the Mayflower). John was by no
means the first Fay to come to America. Available Town records in New
England show for example that (1) Richard Fay resided in Dorchester MA in
1634; (2) Henry Fay, a weaver of Newberry MA died 6/30/1655 and (3)
William Fay was admitted as a townsman in Boston in 1643. These Fay's
unquestionably preceded John Fay to America (1656), but there are no
records to establish any interrelationship between any of them.
There is, however, reasonable evidence that
his father and a brother Michael had preceded him to America. Although
there is no documented record of the father (David) or Michael's birth or
death. Reference is made in the early Town records of Sudbury,
Massachusetts, that the father of John and Michael was David Fay "who
came to America prior to 1656." On the other hand the direct lineage
of the descendants of John Fay from his birth in 1648 down to 1898 were
clearly and logically documented in the records accumulated in Orlin P.
Fay's book.
The passenger list of the Speedwell lists
five minors, including John Fay age 8 years. These young men were bound to
Sudbury MA (settled 17 years previously) where each of them had parents or
relatives. It is presumed that since John Fay was the youngest of these
minors, he very likely had parents already residing in Sudbury.
Shortly after John Fay's arrival a group of
recent immigrants, including young John moved to a new grant which was
newly incorporated under the name of Marlboro, MA. The early records of
Marlboro show that John Fay was made a freeman in 1669, at which time he
had a wife and child. In 1675 the name of John Fay appears among the
proprietors of Worcester Mass., and that he had a lot of 50 acres assigned
to him "in the eastern squadron, lying next to the County road to
Boston." Although, he owned land in Worcester he continued to live in
Marlboro until the marauding Indians during the Phillips War made it
necessary to move his family to the greater security of Watertown Mass.
While in Watertown he buried his first wife, Mary Brigham and one child.
His second marriage was to Susan "Susanna" Shattuck who was the
widow of Joseph Morse. She had 7 children by Morse and 4 by John Fay.
After John Fay's death, Susan married as her third husband, Thomas
Brigham, who was a brother of John Fay's first wife, Mary Brigham. It is
interesting to record that from Susan's last marriage, one of her
descendants [actually it was her husband Thomas' brother Samuel] was Peter
Bent Brigham who left a sum of $1,000,000 which was not to be spent until
25 years after his death. By this time the fund had grown to $2,000,000
and was used to build the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital, a world famous

Ship and Passenger Information:
This list is annotated by the Searcher's
office, Gravesend, England, with the date of "30th May, 1656".
However, an additional annotation indicates they "were Landed at
Boston in N. E. the 27th of the Month, 1656. J. E." The list may have
been prepared at departure by the Searcher's office or later by the
vessel's master, under a high bond as assurance of the accuracy about
those actually making the voyage (such lists were dated at arrival and
were endorsed at the Searcher's office on return of the vessel). The
source listing, however, shows the "J.E." entry as an
endorsement after that of the Searcher's office. In this case, the
initials "J.E." were not those of the master and the month was
not specified. This leaves questions about the month in which the
"27th" actually occurred - before, during, or after May.

From my personal research, I think that
John Fay was born in Penton Mewsey, Hampshire, England and not in France.
There are unpublished records in England which support this research, but
I haven't gotten to see them firsthand. Anyway a large clan of FAY family
members are still in England and trace themselves to Collingbourne-Ducis,
Wiltshire well before 1600. There is a David FAY marrying an Elizabeth
Coale/Cole in December 1616 in Penton Mewsey. This is published in the
Parish marriage records, which I found at the Clayton Library in Houston,
TX. This is the only David Fay I've found in England for this period.
Notes for THOMAS BRIGHAM:
Thomas Brigham married a second wife
Susanna, on 30 July 1695, daughter of William Shattuck of Watertown and
widow (1) of Joseph Morse and (2) of John Fay, whose first wife was Mary,
the sister of Thomas. It will be noted that every descendant of Thomas is
also a descendant of Edmund Rice, who is an ancestor of many colonial
families in eastern Massachusetts. He had a large number of children, some
of whom were of mature age at the time of the emigration.

married SARAH LARKIN1 01 May 1699 in Marlborough, daughter of JOHN LARKIN
and JOANNA HALE. She died Unknown1.
Notes for DAVID FAY:
David Fay inherited the homestead on the
north side of Clean Hill. He settled in that part of Marlboro which was
set off to Southboro, east of Wolfpen Hill, and with Robert Horn, about
1731, built a grist mill on Stony Brook in the southeast part of the town.
He united with the church April 2, 1710.
Before the incorporation of the town of Southboro he was placed on a
committee to seat the meeting in Marlboro, and the next year he was chosen
Constable of Southboro, where he was also elected Selectman in 1730, 1733,
and 1735.
He was by occupation a weaver.
His wife at the time of her marriage was an
heir to Edward Larkin of Charlestown, where he and his wife, Sara, Jan.
27, 1709-1710, sold for $150, to Joseph Kent of Charlestown, land formerly
owned by John Larkin. Jan 28, 1706-1707, he exchanged land with Isaac
Temple.
He and his family, also the families of
Moses Newton, John Newton, Widow Johnson, Moses Newton, Jr., and James
Cady were assigned to the "Garrison" of Isaac Howe for
protection from the Indians.

5. GERSHOM3 FAY (SUSANNA2 SHATTUCK,
WILLIAM1) was born 19 Oct 1681 in Marlboro, Massachusetts, and died 24 Nov
1720. He married MARY BRIGHAM 1702, daughter of JOHN BRIGHAM and SARAH
UNKNOWN. She was born 06 May 1678, and died Unknown.
Notes for GERSHOM FAY:
Gershom was one of the first settlers in
that part of Marlboro that was afterward set off to Westboro in 1717 and
again set off to Northboro in 1727; thus was he an inhabitant of three
towns in succession without moving his habitation. He served as Constable
in Marlboro in 1714 and in 1718, March 3, being included in Westboro, he
was chosen Surveyor of that town. July 24, 1720 and in 1721 he was elected
one of the committee for building the first meeting house which stood
about 80 rods [1 rod = 16.5 feet] west of Wessonville. In 1720 he was
again chosen Constable.
He was admitted to the church in Marlboro
before he was set off to Westboro, and continued to worship there until
that part of the town where he lived was included in Westboro.
He died at the age of 39 years, leaving a
large tract of land in the northwest part of Northboro to be divided to
his four sons. His estate was settled without recourse to a probate court.
He left six or seven minor children who
were brought up to respectability and industry with no other guardian than
their heroic and energetic mother, Mary Brigham, daughter of Dr. John
Brigham of Sudbury. She was distinguished for heroism in the Indian war.
She received $375 by her father's will.
Gershom Fay was the youngest son of John
Fay and he built the first saw mill in Northboro, 60 rods east of the
Unitarian church.

Marlborough and his Descendants" by Orlin P. Fay, 1898, page 331.
Notes for MARY BRIGHAM:
Mary and her husband were exposed, like
others of that day, to the incursions of the Indians, and as a protection,
palisades were erected around many of the houses to serve as a fort or
resort to which the families in the neighborhood might repair in case the
Indians should make their appearance. In 1707 a tragical event occurred in
Marlboro in that part of the township now included in Northboro. Among the
garrison houses in town at that time was one known as Samuel Goodnow's
near the stream called Stirrup Brook. This garrison was designed as the
resort of the families of Nathaniel Oakes, Jonathan Forbush and Gershom
Fay, as well as that of Mr. Goodnow. This precaution undoubtedly saved the
life of Mrs. Fay and her two oldest children.
In 1707, Aug. 18, she [Mary was 29 years
old at the time] and Miss Mary Goodnow, daughter of Samuel Goodnow, were
gathering herbs in a meadow when they saw 20 or more stout Indian warriors
stealthily approaching them. They immediately ran for the fort. Mrs. Fay
with her children succeeded in reaching it and closing the gate before her
pursuers could overtake her. Fortunately there was one man in the
garrison, the rest of the men being at work in the field. The savages
attempted to break through the enclosure but were repelled by the heroic
defenders within, Mrs. Fay loading the muskets belonging to the fort and
handing them to her companion; whether it was her husband or not, we do
not know, but he was able to keep a constant fire upon the enemy till a
party of their friends in the field, hearing the report of the muskets,
came to their relief and the enemy fled. Thus was the life of this woman
and her two helpless children saved by her own heroism.
William A. Bartlett of Northboro, whose
mother and grandmother were Fay's, writes April 3, 1884, as follows:
"It is a question whether the garrison house or fort, in which Mrs.
Fay's heroism was displayed was some part of the house in which I now
live, or whether it was another near by, built on purpose. The grave of
Mary Goodnow is on my farm about 30 rods from my house." Her grave
still remained without a monument in 1866. She being lame, could not
escape from her merciless pursuers. She was overtaken, seized and dragged
into the woods across Stirrup Brook and inhumanly murdered and scalped,
her mangled remains were found and buried a few days after and her grave
was visible 130 years afterwards. The Indians were pursued and overtaken
and a battle ensued in which two white men and nine Indians were killed.
The packs of the Indians fell into the hands of the whites and in one of
them was found the scalp of Miss Goodnow, which furnished the first clue
of her melancholy fate.
A large elm tree growing in the cellar,
marks the spot where once stood the house of Gershom Fay.

7. DEACON JOHN4 FAY (DAVID3, SUSANNA2
SHATTUCK, WILLIAM1) was born 16 Dec 1710 in Marlboro, Massachusetts, and
died 22 May 1789 in Sourthboro, Massachusetts. He married THANKFUL TAYLOR.
She died 22 Dec 1790 in Sourthboro, Massachusetts.
Notes for DEACON JOHN FAY:
The town right of his ancestor, David,
purchased of Peter Bent, in which his uncle John of Westboro had drawn
sundry lots, was wholly or partly inherited by him, for it was in his
possession, and by him sold in 1770 "for a valuable sum." He
sold June 5, 1770, to John Mathis of Marlboro a 16 acre "right,"
which had been bought of Peter Bent to be taken up in the common land of
Marlboro. He settled where his great grandson, Ebenezer, afterwards
resided in Southboro, and commenced with a log house.
Tradition says he was a man of ardent
devotion and chose as his altar a place beside a rock in a graveyard near
his house, to which he would repair every morning to offer up his private
devotions to Him who is the Lord of the morning and evening. He was
elected deacon of the church in Southboro in 1766, and was chosen
Selectman eight times in ten years. He was Town Treasurer three years. In
1768 he was honored with the command of a military company.
Living at a time when the rights and
privileges of the Colonies were contested by the British Parliament, a
public man like John Fay could not be neutral, nor did he hesitate for a
moment when the resolution was taken not to import, nor purchase of
importers, or consume articles on which Great Britain had imposed a duty
for the purpose of raising a revenue in America to sustain the home
government.
A covenant was drawn up in which the
signers "solemnly pledge themselves to non-importation and
non-consumption of articles thus taxed." this covenant bears the name
of John Fay and ten others of the name of Fay, so that this
"family" united cordially with the other patriotic citizens of
Sourthboro in adopting those measures which in the end completely baffled
the arbitrary acts of Parliament and gave us a place among the nations of
the earth.

ELIZABETH JOSLYN 28 Apr 1743 in Southboro, Worcester, Massachusetts. She
died 04 Sep 1760.
Notes for ROBERT FAY:
In 1749, Robert Fay purchased of Jacob
Wheeler a farm situated in Southboro about one and a half miles east by
south from the center, where he is supposed to have reared his great
family of 20 children, which could hardly have allowed him time to serve
the public in any office. He was however, Surveyor and Collector of Taxes
in 1747, Constable in 1755, and Tythingman in 1763 and 1768. He served in
the French and Indian War, and attained the rank of Captain before the
close of the war.
An unparalleled circumstance occurred with
Robert Fay and his brother Aaron. Each married two wives, and had 20
children. Each wife had ten children, and of each wife's children there
were seven sons and three daughters, a total in the two families of 28
sons and 12 daughters. Tradition renders it certain that Aaron duplicate
the family of his brother in every particular.

Notes for DEACON HEZEKIAH FAY:
Deacon Hezekiah Fay was a carpenter,
farmer, and Revolutionary soldier. Tradition says, in the Revolutionary
service he was once attached to a body of men called the Briar Hill Guard
and stationed near New York. The enemy entering that city at the time,
were so near capturing them that he felt himself to be a prisoner. At this
crisis, General Putnam arrived, having ascertained the Briar Hill Guards
were not called in he left the retreating army for their rescue, and
succeeded in drawing them off in safety. This brave act, so adroitly
performed, excited such emotions of gratitude and admiration in Mr. Fay
that he declared if he ever had a son his name should be Putnam. That
corresponding action followed these emotions may be seen by the record of
his family, as his first born was named Putnam.
Soon after his marriage he settled upon a
small farm and for many years divided his time between agriculture and
mechanical pursuits. There being a "mill privilege" on his
premises, in process of time he erected a grist mill thereon, and for
awhile performed the part of miller. He was honored with civil and
military offices and was also deacon of his church, as was his father
before him.
His son Willard was a farmer occasioinally
engaged in other business, at one time manufacturing cabinet ware at
Reading, Massachusetts, when about 48 years of age he advertised for a
wife; responding to this call the postage on letters at one time amounted
to $7. His reply to one of them resulted in marriage at Southbury, Conn.,
where he afterwards settled and where he died.

Notes for LAURA SOPHIA BRIGHAM:
Laura Sophia Brigham is from the same
Thomas Brigham Family that in 1669 had Mary Brigham marry John Fay. The
Fay line in our family comes from John Fay's second marriage to Susanna
Shattuck Morse in 1678. It is interesting to record that Laura Sophia's
ancestor Thomas Brigham's (1640-1716) brother Samuel (1652-1713) was the
progenitor of Peter Bent Brigham who left a sum of $1,000,000 which was
not to be spent until 25 years after his death. By this time the fund had
grown to $2,000,000 and was used to build the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital,
a world famous medical research hospital connected with Harvard Medical
School in Boston, Mass.
Laura lived with her parents in Natick in
1850 census.

Notes for HATTIE EDITH MERRILL:
Park Stone Fay, also a carpenter like
Hattie's father, George Merrill, preferred an independent status. Instead
of joining George Merrill, he handled all the boats and work at Beaver
Island. Park, Hattie, and their five children had a cottage near The Gulf
on what was then called Mansfield's Point, where George Merrill laid the
stone steps leading from the dock to the Fay's' house. In the side yard, a
tent was built to hold the overflow of children and friends. It was the
children's job to gather rocks from the lake for the stone mason, Mr.
Zibley of Center Harbor, to build the living room fireplace.

Mary Ellen Perkins was tried and convicted of Witchcraft at the Salem
Witch Trials in1692.
Mary Perkins Witch Trial Information
Source: "The Family of John Perkins of
Ipswich, Massachusetts", by Geo. A. Perkins, M.D., Salem, 1882
"In 1692, Jacob Perkinss sister Mary
Perkins Bradbury was placed on trial for witchcraft. At the time, she was
living in Salisbury, Massachusetts. Richard Carr's father had been a
suitor of Mary before she married Thomas Bradbury. This led to a fifteen
year disagreement with Mary and he probably influenced his sons and his
son's friend in their testimony. Her reply to the indictment was as
follows:
"I plead not guilty. I am wholly
innocent of such wickedness through the goodness of God that hath kept me
hitherto. I am the servant of Jesus Christ, and have given myself up to
him as my only Lord and Saviour, and to the diligent attendance upon him
in all his holy ordinances, in utter contempt and defiance of the Devil
and all his works, as horrid and detestable; and have endeavored to frame
my life and conversation in accordance with His holy word and in that
faith and practice, resolve, by the help and assistance of God, to
continue to my life's end. For the truth of what I have to say as to the
matter of practice, I humbly refer myself to my brethren and neighbors
that know me, and to the searcher of all hearts, for the truth and
uprightness of my heart therein, human frailties & unavoidable
infirmaties excepted, of which I bitterly complain every day."
All of the depositions against Mary were
recorded in Seargent Thomas Putnam's handwriting except one. Richard Carr
and Zarubabel Endicott testified that they had seen a blue boar come from
and re-enter her yard and window. This was spectral evidence. Samuel Carr,
Richard's brother also testified that he had seen Mary perched on the
capstan of a ship at sea when things were going badly. William Carr
testified that there was nothing he knew against Mary and referred to a
broken love affair between the families.
Mr. and Mrs. Bradbury were prominent
citizens and signatures of 118 of her friends and neighbors of a statement
"Concerning Mary Bradbury's life and
conversation, we, the subscribers, do testify, that it was such as became
the gospel: she was a lover of the ministry, in all appearance, and a
diligent attender upon God' holy ordinances, being of a courteous and
peaceable disposition and carriage. Neither did any of us (some of whom
have lived in the town with her above fifty years) ever hear or ever know
that she ever had any differences of falling-out with any of her
neighbors, man, woman or child, but was always ready and willing to do for
them what lay in her power night and day, though with hazard of her health
or other danger. More might be spoken in her commendation, but this for
the present."
This written testimony was not enough, as
she was convicted anyway. By this time the Court of Oyer and Terminer had
agreed not to execute any who plead guilty, but Mary had pleaded not
guilty. She was convicted of witchcraft on 9 Sep 1692 and sentenced to be
executed on 22 Sep 1692. It is not known how she escapted.
The last convicted witch execution took
place on 22 Sep 1692. In the following month, the new Governor Phipps was
appointed and put an end to the Court of Oyer and Terminer that had been
doing the sentencing. Any remaining convicted witches (those that had
plead guilt) had their sentences commuted by the governor. This was the
end of the trials. On 17 Dec 1711, the governor and council authorized
payment to twenty-three persons condemned at Salem. Marys descendants
received twenty pounds in compensation."
Excerpts from : Bradbury memorial.
Records of some of the descendants of
Thomas Bradbury, of Agamenticus (York) in 1634, and of Salisbury, Mass. in
1638, with a brief sketch of the Bradburys of England. Comp. chiefly from
the collections of the late John Merrill Bradbury, of Ipswich, Mass. Page
63 - regarding Mary (Perkins) Bradbury at the Salem Witch Trails - During
the trial of Mrs. Bradbury, July 28, 1692, upon the charge of being a
witch, her aged and devoted husband bore testimony to her high character
and the purity of her life in the following terms:
"Concerning my beloved wife, Mary
Bradbury, this is what I have to say: We have been married fifty-five
years, and she hath been a loving and faithful wife unto me unto this day.
She hath been wonderful laborious, diligent and industrious in her place
and employment about the bringing up of our family which have been eleven
children of our own, and four grandchildren. She was both prudent and
provident, of cheerful spirit, liberal and charitable. She being now very
aged and weak, and grieved under aflictious, may not be able to speak much
for herself, not being so free of speech as some others might be. I hope
her life and conversation among her neighbors has been such as gives a
better or more real testimony than can be expressed by words."
Rev. James Allen testified as follows:
"I, having lived nine years at Salisbury in the work of the ministry,
and now four years in the office of pastor, to my best notice and
observation of Mrs. Bradbury, she hath lived according to the rules of the
gospel amongst us; was a constant attender upon the ministry of the word,
and all the ordinances of the gospel; full of works of charity and mercy
to the sick and poor; neither have I seen or heard anything of her
unbecoming the profession of the gospel."
Upham, the historian of the Salem
witchcraft, says of Mrs. Bradbury: "The position as well as character
and age of Mary (Perkins) Bradbury, entitled her to the highest
consideration in the structure of society at that time. This is recognized
in the title Mrs. Uniformly given her. She had been noted through life for
energy, business capacity, and influence: her husband Thomas Bradbury had
been a prominent character in the colony for more than fifty years."
The character of the evidence used against
Mrs. Bradbury may be judged by the following: "The deposition of
William Carr, who testifieth and saith that about thirteen years ago,
presently after some difference that happened to be between my honored
father, Mr. George Carr, and Mrs. Bradbury, the prisoner at her bar, upon
a Sabbath at noon, as we were riding home by the house of Capt. Thomas
Bradbury, I saw Mrs. Bradbury go into her gate, turn the corner of, and
immediately there darted out of her gate a blue boar, and darted at my
fathers horses legs which made him stumble; but I saw it no more. And my
father said, "Boys, what did you see?" And we both said, "A
blue boar!" This venerable woman was about eighty years of age when
she was arrested for the crime of bewitching John Carr so that he became
crazed and prematurely died. The testimony of William Carr at the trial,
went to show that his brother fell in love with Jemima True, but the
proposed match being opposed and broken off by the father of young Carr,
on account of his youth, he became melancholy and at times insane. He
further stated that he was with his brother and cared for him in his last
sickness, and that his brother died peaceably and quietly, and never spoke
anything to the harm of Mrs. Bradbury or anybody else.
Mrs. Bradbury was defended by Major Robert
Pike. She was convicted with four others who were executed September,
1692. Mrs. Bradbury escaped punishment, but by what means, does not
appear.
From Wikipedia
Mary (née Perkins) Bradbury (baptized
September 3, 1615 - December 20, 1700) was tried, convicted and sentenced
to hang as a witch in Salem, Massachusetts in 1692. However, she managed
to evade sentence until the trials had been discredited, and died in 1700,
aged 85.
Mary Perkins was daughter of John and
Judith (née Gater) Perkins, baptized in 1615, at Warwickshire, England.
Her family immigrated to America in 1631, sailing on the LYON from
Bristol. In 1636 she married Thomas Bradbury of Salisbury, Massachusetts,
considered one of its most distinguished citizens, land agent for his
great-uncle Ferdinando Gorges and son of Elizabeth Whitgift, whose uncle
John Whitgift was Archbishop of Canterbury under Elizabeth and James.
In the notorious witch trials of 1692, Mary
Bradbury was indicted for (among other charges):
Certaine Detestable arts called Witchcraft
& Sorceries Wickedly Mallitiously and felloniously hath used practiced
and Exercised At and in the Township of Andivor in the County of Essex
aforesaid in upon & against one Timothy Swann of Andivor In the County
aforesaid Husbandman - by which said Wicked Acts the said Timothy Swann
upon the 26th day of July Aforesaid and divers other days & times both
before and after was and is Tortured Afflicted Consumed Pined Wasted and
Tormented.Witnesses testified that she assumed animal forms; her most
unusual metamorphosis was said to have been that of a blue boar. Another
allegation was that she cast spells upon ships. Over a hundred of her
neighbors and townspeople testified on her behalf, but to no avail and she
was found guilty of practicing magic and sentenced to be executed. Through
the ongoing efforts of her friends, her execution was delayed. After the
witch debacle had passed, she was released. By some accounts she was
allowed to escape. Others claim she bribed her jailer. Another account
claims that her husband bribed the jailer and took her away to Maine in a
horse and cart. They returned to Massachusetts after the witch hysteria
had died down. Mary Bradbury died of natural causes in her own bed in
1700, aged 85.
Her family friend, and her son-in-law's
father, Major Robert Pike, was in command of all the forces of Norfolk
County, Massachusetts Bay Colony and those located in present-day Maine.
As early as 1650 he was what would now be called a trial justice and in
1672 an associate judge of the courts of Norfolk Co. In political life a
member of the General Court when 32 and of the Governor's Council from
1682-96, when having reached the age of 50 years he retired to the private
life of the farm.
Mary Perkins Bradbury and Thomas Bradbury
had eleven children:

Lake Winnipesaukee.
According to Fred Bulkley, "Ice was
cut from the lake in the winter, covered with sawdust and stored in the
big ice house at the shore line. It was my job to haul the 300 pound
blocks of ice from the ice house and saw them into 75 pound pieces which
sold at 50 cents each, delivered. The ice route ran four days a week in
the morning, along northwest Bear and Pine and to the Beaver Islands in
the afternoon. The Merrills' nephew, Wilbur Fay, handled the northeast
route and also delivered groceries from the store."

Annie Fay Holt, 101
June 5, 2023
from the Concord Bridge newspaper
Annie Fay Holt, a loving mother, sister, grandmother, and great-grandmother, left us on May 27, 2023, at the age of 101.
Annie was born in Laconia, New Hampshire on March 21,1922 the daughter of the late Victor and Blanche (Dolloff) Rand. Upon graduating from Laconia High School, she enlisted in the WAVES, or Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service, a branch of female reservists in the United States Navy, where she served as a Radioman 3rd class. Stationed in California, Annie was responsible for transmitting battle orders to the Pacific Fleet by
morse code.
While serving in the Navy, she married her high school sweetheart, George Fay, who was also serving in the Navy as a lieutenant. After the war ended, George and Annie settled in Wakefield, Massachusetts, where they raised two sons.
Annie earned a bachelorīs degree from Salem State University and a masterīs degree from Tufts University before beginning a career in teaching. She taught in the Lexington school system for many years. After George died, she moved to Concord, where she became very active with the West Concord Union Church. She met John Holt in Concord, and they were married in 1980.
Annie and John raised quarter horses together in Groton and Barrington, New Hampshire, before returning to Concord in 1994. Annie and John were valued members of the West Concord Union Church congregation and particularly enjoyed their involvement in Sunday Fellowship, a community for adults of all abilities. Following Johnīs death, Annie continued to be active member in the Concord community, a frequent host to friends and family, a world traveler, and a volunteer with the Concord Womenīs Club. An avid reader, swimmer, and faithful letter writer, Annie lived independently until she reached 100, a longtime goal. For this milestone, Annie was celebrated by family, friends, neighbors, church members, and even former students from decades past.
