Mike:

See today's posting "Re David Merrill 1769-1859" . Your Jacob Lee is the son of above David Merrill. Jacob Lee m. Mary Smith of Center Harbor. They are listed in the Holderness census of 1850,1860 and 1870. They had 4 known children: Julia A, Mary L, John S, and George D.

'A Merrill Memorial' has nothing on your Jacob Lee but does have info on what we believe are his grandparents Jacob (5) and Elizabeth Wyatt.

We would be very interested in any information you have on the Merrill surname descendants of your Jacob Lee down to the present day.

Benjamin M. Smith

Notes for BENJAMIN M. SMITH:

When Ben was a teenager, the Boston, Concord and Montreal Railroad announced plans to run a rail line to Laconia, Weirs, Meredith Village, Winona and points north. John Smith bough 100 shares of stock in the railroad company , and to insure the railroad's success, he and other investors had to buy additional stock, until Mr. Smith had $6,000 invested.

At about the same time, young Ben, then 16, apprenticed with his uncle in South Deerfield, New Hampshire, to learn the shoemaking trade. Eventually, the Boston, Concord and Montreal Railroad faltered, and the stock had to be sold at a great loss.

After his marriage to Mary Grinald, he resumed his sales route to the North Shore, and soon his business was so prosperous, he was selling not only yarn, but also manufactured hosiery and handkerchiefs. Ben became known as "The Yarn Man." He bought property where Lang Street School and the Inter-Lakes Day Care Center now sit. He built his house on the Inter-Lakes Day Care Center property which is known as the Bixby House.

For a hobby, Ben was an avid horticulturist, and several new strains of strawberries and other fruits were produced in his gardens. Later in life, he bough and enjoyed a summer home on Massachusetts Avenue in Meredith. He retired in 1909 and died at the age of 77 in Wenham, Massachusetts, on March 16, 1912.

Benjamin Smith gave the public library to Meredith, New Hampshire, in 1901 in honor of his parents, John Smith and Mary Mudget Smith. In 1873, Center Harbor was broken away from Meredith. This was taken to court and upheld.

He married MARY BIRD 25 Feb 1883 in Meredith, New Hampshire, daughter of THOMAS BIRD and MARY MCCUE. She was born 03 May 1862 in Isle of Malta, British Province, and died 26 Jun 1925 in Lakeport, NH.

Notes for GEORGE DAVID MERRILL:

When George and Mary (Bird) Merrill bought land behind the Mail Dock in 1906, they began the saga of the Merrill family on Bear Island, Lake Winnipesaukee, New Hampshire. In addition to building many of the cottages on the island, George Merrill also provided food, ice and boat services to several generations of island residents.

As the only house on the island with plaster and wallpapered walls, the Merrills' was unique. According to their granddaughter, Mildred Fay Rand, "A well and pump graced the side yard in the center of Hattie's flower beds and people came from along the shore with their jugs to pump water. The playroom was on the third floor. The property next door was the 'Men's Camp.' The workmen employed by my grandfather in his carpentry business lived there and cooked their meals, though occasionally Hattie prepared food for them in her kitchen. The haying field was behind the hen house and vegetable garden. Cattle were brought over by barge from Lovejoy Sands in the spring and taken back in the fall. Milk cost 18 cents a quart, but you had to buy ice and groceries to get it!"

About halfway down the shore lived Dr. George Saltmarch of Lakeport, who was Mary's doctor. Molly Worden from Pine Island, just a stone's throw away, was her midwife. Molly assisted Mary when all nine Merrill babies were born; only one did not live. Arthur was the eldest, then Hattie, Gertrude, Fred, David, Edgar, Helen, and Nellie. All grew up helping with chores, and George taught his carpentry skills to each of his sons who helped him in the business.

WW 1 interrupted the family enterprise when David and Fred were inducted into the Army. David was never sent overseas, but Fred served in observation balloons over the English Channel. He was once shot down, but not seriously injured. Both returned home to help their father, and in time, David married Faith Wood and daughter Hattie married Park Stone Fay.

Hello Ron, Thanks for the offer, I will take you up on it. My grandfather, Jacob Lee Merrill was born in Holderness in 1818. In the census of 1870 in Center Harbor, he was 52 yrs. He was married to Mary Smith. My grandfather was George D. Merrill, b. 7/25/1861 and died in Laconia on 5/5/1924. I really need the death certificate of Jacob Lee. Would also like the name of his wife, Mary Smith. We have little access to good genealogical info here in Nevada. Thanks, Mike

Mary Bird Merrill

Notes for MARY BIRD:

In 1883, at age 21, Mary Bird married farmer George Merrill who was 22 years old, who was a skilled carpenter, and the couple settled on Bear Island, in the center of Lake Winnipesaukee, living in the only house on the island with plaster and wallpapered walls. They had eight children - a ninth was stillborn - including Susan Jean Fay's grandmother Hattie, who was the oldest, and Rachel Meghan Markles great-grandmother Gertrude, who was born in 1887. The couple was well-known in the community - all the children grew up helping with chores and George taught his carpentry skills to each of his sons to help him in the business.

According to Bear Island Reflections published by the local Conservation Association: When George and Mary Merrill bought land behind the Mail Dock in 1906, they began the saga of the Merrill family on Bear Island. In addition to building many of the cottages on the island George Merrill also provided food, ice and boat services to several generations of island residents.

The article quotes the couples great-granddaughter Mildred Fay Rand (1907 - 2012), who said: A well and pump graced the side yard in the center of daughter Hattie's flower beds and people came from along the shore with their jugs to pump water. The playroom was on the third floor. The property next door was the Men's Camp.

The workmen employed by my grandfather in his carpentry business lived there and cooked their meals, though occasionally Hattie prepared food for them in her kitchen.

The haying field was behind the hen house and vegetable garden. Cattle were brought over by barge from Lovejoy Sands in the spring and taken back in the fall. Milk cost 18 cents a quart, but you had to buy ice and groceries to get it!

Sadly both George and Mary (Bird) Merrill died young: George was 63 years old when he died in 1924. Mary was the same age when she succumbed to heart disease the following year. But their eight children went on to marry and settle across America, spawning a generation to include Rachel Meghan Markle (Duchess of Sussex).

Mary was a member of Freewill Baptist Church, Meredith, NH.

Perhaps the most interesting part of our family history, is Mary Bird's origins on the Mediterranean Island of Malta - -

There have been several spellings of Mary's maiden name. According to Hattie Bird (1865 - 1945) and John McManany's marriage certificate, Mary's mothers maiden name was Cayne, and she lived in Laconia in 1892.

From research done by Fiona Fitzsimons and Helen Moss, genealogists with The Irish Family History Center in Dublin in July 2018, Mary's maiden name was either McCue or McHugh from Belfast, Ireland. This research report was reported in the 15 July 2018 Sunday Independent (www.independent.ie).

This research presents marriage records showing Mary McCue (McHugh) was living at Merrion Strand in Dublin when at 31, she married 30 year old Thomas Bird, a private in the 22nd (Cheshire) Regiment of Foot, in Saint Mary's Church of Ireland church in Donnybrook in Dublin on Monday, January 23, 1860. It included a marriage record from the church. [The 22nd (Cheshire) Regiment of Foot was formed in 1689 by Henry, The Duke of Norfolk. They fort in the American Revolutionary War against the 13 Colonies. They were sent to Boston in 1775, and evacuated from Boston to Halifax. Then onto the New York and New Jersey campaigns of 1776. Its Light Infantry Company participated in the Philadelphia Campaign of 1777 and later the Southern Campaigns in the 1780s, eventually surrendering with Cornwallis at Yorktown. During World War 1, on 24 August 1914 the 1st Battalion suffered 771 casualties at Audregnies in Belgium during the closing stages of the Battle of Mons. The reconstituted battalion served throughout World War I on the Western Front, winning 35 battle honors. During World War 2 they fort in France before being evacuated at Dunkirk.] Thomas had served in the army in India in the previous decade and he was living in a barracks near Donnybrook in Dublin at the time of the marriage. Thomas' regiment had only recently returned from India after 10 years. They arrived in Dublin in August, 1859 and were stationed in Beggars Bush Barracks. [In 2019, Beggars Bush Barracks is on Haddington Road in the inner southern suburbs of Dublin, Ireland. The barracks were bordered to the east by Shelbourne Road, which used to be the western bank of the River Dodder.] Mary's father's name was listed in the marriage register as Francis McCue with an occupation of farmer. Thomas' father was listed as a laborer.

Soon after they married, in June 1860, the regiment was sent to Malta. Thomas and Mary caught a train from Kingstown, present day Dun Laoghaire, to Queenstown, now Cobh, where they boarded the steam ship Olympus. On board the voyage to Malta were 573 members of the regiment, including 16 drummers, and 66 women and 67 children.

The regiment was stationed on the Mediterranean island until 1866. The couple had at least two children: Mary and Hattie (Harriett). In March 1866, the regiment was sent to Canada. The long journey to New Brunswick, Canada, may have taken its toll on Thomas who died in July 1866, aged 36. There's Mary at 39 years old with 2 children (Mary and Hattie) and a dead husband in Canada alone in May 1867. Mary then married a widower, William White, a soldier in the same regiment as her husband Thomas. Two years later (1869), the regiment was transferred to Cork but Mary and William decided to remain in Canada.

Mary and William settled on a farm in Manners Sutton, York, NB, Canada, and Mary at age 41 gave birth to two more children. (Manners Sutton, York, NB is on Route 3 half way between Fredericton and Calais West of St John, NB.) Their daughter Alexandrine died at age 10. Alexandrine's baptism listed Mary's maiden name as McKeg. Their son William Thomas was born in 1873 when Mary was 44. In the 1871 Canadian census in New Brunswick, Mary White and her two daughters (Mary and Hattie) from her marriage to Thomas Bird and a new daughter by William White - Alexandrine, are listed as Irish and Roman Catholic. Her husband William was listed as English and a shoemaker who was a member of the Anglican Church.

In 1883, daughter Mary at age 21 married 22 year old George Merrill in New Hampshire. Finally, the well-travelled Belfast woman, Mary White, died of pneumonia, age in her mid-50s after 1892. Her son William Thomas died at 17 in Lakeport, New Hampshire, in 1890. His death record states his mother's maiden name was McCue and that she was born in Belfast.

In 1892, Hattie (1865 - 1945) at age 27 married John McMenany and listed her mother's maiden name as McCague. On the US census from 1930, Hattie stated her mother was born in Northern Ireland.

There are different spellings of Hattie's name to include Harriette. From the NH archieves - - Hattie Bird married John Mc Menany on Dec 26, 1892. They were both 27. He was a teamster and she was a Mill Operator. John was born in Charleton, Mass; and Hattie in Malta. Both first marriages. John's father was Patrick Mc Manany a resident of Cambridge, Mass; and his mother Bridget Mc Carun (?? not sure of spelling) born in Ireland and dead at the time of the marriage in 1892. NH archive records show Hattie's father was Thomas Bird born in England and dead at the time of the marriage in 1892; and mother Mary McCue/McHugh/McCague/Cayne (born in Ireland) living in Laconia.

Originally reported on 23 September 2017 in The Mail On Sunday by Claudia Joseph was the fact that Mary worked as a Royal Household staff member in the Windsor Castle Weekly Disbursement Book in 1856 as M. Bird. Not apparently so, as in 1856 at age 27 she did not carry the Bird last name. It still may be possible, but with a different last name. Additionally, the marriage certificate for her daughter Mary to George Merrill spelled her last name as McCague. Lorna Moloney (working independently on US records) found a woman with the name Mary McCague who was born in Ballinasloe, Co Galway, in 1829 and there was a certain likelihood it could be the same person, but it was always subject to verification which has not occurred.

18. i. ARTHUR GEORGE10 MERRILL, b. 10 Feb 1884, Center Harbor, New Hampshire; d. 20 Dec 1949.

19. ii. HATTIE EDITH MERRILL, b. 25 Jun 1885, West Center Harbor, NH; d. 04 Apr 1962, Dover, New Hampshire.

20. iii. GERTRUDE MAY MERRILL, b. 16 Jun 1887, Meredith, New Hampshire; d. 11 Feb 1938.

iv. FRED MERRILL, b. 01 Sep 1889; d. 14 Jun 1964, Meredith, New Hampshire; m. DOROTHY 'DOTTIE' ALMENDE; b. 01 Jun 1901; d. 02 Dec 1973, Meredith, New Hampshire.

Notes for FRED MERRILL:

Over the years, the Merrills built a number of houses on the west shore of Bear Island, each with the same basic simple design. These cottages are still recognizable today, even though various owners have made different additions. In 1927, Fred Merrill built the Bulkley house, which had the distinction of being the first on Bear Island to have had indoor plumbing.

When you needed a cabin, dock or boat house, you simply told Fred of your desire and he obliged. In 1931, Dr. John Merselis commissioned Fred to build on land he had purchased in 1923. Sketching what he had in mind on the back of an ordinary envelope, Dr. Merselis gave it to Fred that fall. When the family returned the following spring, the cabin was ready for occupancy, and they have summered there ever since.

In addition to building houses, the Merrills supplied much that was necessary for island living. Dave, the meat cutter, minded the grocery store that they opened at the Mail Dock and Fred, the mechanic, assumed responsibility for kerosene for lamps, and gasoline for boats, as well as maintenance of rental boats berthed in a nest of boat houses by their dock. These boats all had two cylinder McDuff engines with petcocks on top which had to be primed with gasoline. The flywheel rotated by hand at times could be very balky. Fred was an expert in starting these engines. He'd lean against the side of the boat, give the flywheel a gentle roll with his foot--and away it went.

At the time Fred Merrill had the ice route, the Bear Island postmaster was Adelaide Brown.

Notes for DOROTHY 'DOTTIE' ALMENDE:

"A lot of comings and goings took place over there [on Bear Island]," recounts Mildred Fay Rand, Fred Merrill's niece. "People came all the way from New York and Boston for some high entertainment. One of the 'imported guests' was a Ziegfeld Follies girl, Dorothy Almende, and Fred caught us all by surprise--he married her! We had expected him to marry someone else to whom he was already engaged."

"That summer we returned to the island to discover that Fred, probably in his early 40s, had married a chorus girl!" Louise Griscom recalls. "Maybe Dottie's make-up was a bit overdone, but she made Fred a loyal and loving wife. Gradually the color of her bright red hair changed to a less conspicuous henna. Islanders recovered from shock and became very fond of her."

Dottie was a Ziegfeld Follies girl who came to visit Lake Winnipesaukee. Her brother-in-law, David Merrill (and his wife Faith Wood) did not like her background and left Bear Island and "moved to Laconia because they could not live and work with a showgirl" according to Mildred Fay Rand, Fred Merrill's niece.

Dottie and Fred took vacations when the lake froze over, but as they grew older, they never left the island. Weeks and Smith's store delivered groceries from Meredith once a week in winter, and on that day, Dottie always baked a cake and served it with coffee to the delivery man who would bring them up-to-date on the latest town gossip. In the winter of 1945, the Merrill's chimney caught fire, and though no serious damage occurred, Fred became ill shortly thereafter and never recovered. When Fred and Dottie moved to Meredith, where he eventually died.

Dottie was the Postmistress of Bear Island, beginning June 15, 1944, to the Post Office's closing in June 15, 1954.

HATTIE EDITH10 MERRILL (GEORGE DAVID9, MARY 'BESSIE' HEUSSEY8 SMITH, JOHN7, JOHN6, CHRISTOPHER5, BENJAMIN4, JOHN3, JOHN2, JOHN1) was born 25 Jun 1885 in West Center Harbor, NH, and died 04 Apr 1962 in Dover, New Hampshire. She married PARK STONE FAY, son of BRIGHAM FAY and IDA HEMENWAY. He was born 05 Jul 1883 in Lake Village, New Hampshire, and died 16 Nov 1951 in Laconia, Belknap New Hampshire.

Notes for HATTIE EDITH MERRILL:

Park Stone Fay, also a carpenter like Hattie's father, George Merrill, preferred an independent status. Instead of joining George Merrill, he handled all the boats and work at Beaver Island. Park, Hattie, and their five children had a cottage near The Gulf on what was then called Mansfield's Point, where George Merrill laid the stone steps leading from the dock to the Fay's' house. In the side yard, a tent was built to hold the overflow of children and friends. It was the children's job to gather rocks from the lake for the stone mason, Mr. Zibley of Center Harbor, to build the living room fireplace.

Hattie filled in as cook on the railroad work train that Park Stone Fay used to get to construction sites.

From New Hampshire Vital Records (as reported by Howard Merrill on December 29, 2000) her name is Harriette Edith Merrill b. June 25, 1885.

Through Hattie Merrill's family, the Merrills and Fays share a maternal Great Grandmother who was convicted of Witchcraft. Hattie Merrill is Mary Ellen Perkins' 6th Great Granddaughter. Mary Ellen Perkins was tried and convicted of Witchcraft at the Salem Witch Trials in1692.

Mary Perkins Witch Trial Information

Source: "The Family of John Perkins of Ipswich, Massachusetts", by Geo. A. Perkins, M.D., Salem, 1882

"In 1692, Jacob Perkinss sister Mary Perkins Bradbury was placed on trial for witchcraft. At the time, she was living in Salisbury, Massachusetts. Richard Carr's father had been a suitor of Mary before she married Thomas Bradbury. This led to a fifteen year disagreement with Mary and he probably influenced his sons and his son's friend in their testimony. Her reply to the indictment was as follows:

"I plead not guilty. I am wholly innocent of such wickedness through the goodness of God that hath kept me hitherto. I am the servant of Jesus Christ, and have given myself up to him as my only Lord and Saviour, and to the diligent attendance upon him in all his holy ordinances, in utter contempt and defiance of the Devil and all his works, as horrid and detestable; and have endeavored to frame my life and conversation in accordance with His holy word and in that faith and practice, resolve, by the help and assistance of God, to continue to my life's end. For the truth of what I have to say as to the matter of practice, I humbly refer myself to my brethren and neighbors that know me, and to the searcher of all hearts, for the truth and uprightness of my heart therein, human frailties & unavoidable infirmaties excepted, of which I bitterly complain every day."

All of the depositions against Mary were recorded in Seargent Thomas Putnam's handwriting except one. Richard Carr and Zarubabel Endicott testified that they had seen a blue boar come from and re-enter her yard and window. This was spectral evidence. Samuel Carr, Richard's brother also testified that he had seen Mary perched on the capstan of a ship at sea when things were going badly. William Carr testified that there was nothing he knew against Mary and referred to a broken love affair between the families.

Mr. and Mrs. Bradbury were prominent citizens and signatures of 118 of her friends and neighbors of a statement

"Concerning Mary Bradbury's life and conversation, we, the subscribers, do testify, that it was such as became the gospel: she was a lover of the ministry, in all appearance, and a diligent attender upon God' holy ordinances, being of a courteous and peaceable disposition and carriage. Neither did any of us (some of whom have lived in the town with her above fifty years) ever hear or ever know that she ever had any differences of falling-out with any of her neighbors, man, woman or child, but was always ready and willing to do for them what lay in her power night and day, though with hazard of her health or other danger. More might be spoken in her commendation, but this for the present."

This written testimony was not enough, as she was convicted anyway. By this time the Court of Oyer and Terminer had agreed not to execute any who plead guilty, but Mary had pleaded not guilty. She was convicted of witchcraft on 9 Sep 1692 and sentenced to be executed on 22 Sep 1692. It is not known how she escapted.

The last convicted witch execution took place on 22 Sep 1692. In the following month, the new Governor Phipps was appointed and put an end to the Court of Oyer and Terminer that had been doing the sentencing. Any remaining convicted witches (those that had plead guilt) had their sentences commuted by the governor. This was the end of the trials. On 17 Dec 1711, the governor and council authorized payment to twenty-three persons condemned at Salem. Marys descendants received twenty pounds in compensation."

Excerpts from : Bradbury memorial.

Records of some of the descendants of Thomas Bradbury, of Agamenticus (York) in 1634, and of Salisbury, Mass. in 1638, with a brief sketch of the Bradburys of England. Comp. chiefly from the collections of the late John Merrill Bradbury, of Ipswich, Mass. Page 63 - regarding Mary (Perkins) Bradbury at the Salem Witch Trails - During the trial of Mrs. Bradbury, July 28, 1692, upon the charge of being a witch, her aged and devoted husband bore testimony to her high character and the purity of her life in the following terms:

"Concerning my beloved wife, Mary Bradbury, this is what I have to say: We have been married fifty-five years, and she hath been a loving and faithful wife unto me unto this day. She hath been wonderful laborious, diligent and industrious in her place and employment about the bringing up of our family which have been eleven children of our own, and four grandchildren. She was both prudent and provident, of cheerful spirit, liberal and charitable. She being now very aged and weak, and grieved under aflictious, may not be able to speak much for herself, not being so free of speech as some others might be. I hope her life and conversation among her neighbors has been such as gives a better or more real testimony than can be expressed by words."

Rev. James Allen testified as follows: "I, having lived nine years at Salisbury in the work of the ministry, and now four years in the office of pastor, to my best notice and observation of Mrs. Bradbury, she hath lived according to the rules of the gospel amongst us; was a constant attender upon the ministry of the word, and all the ordinances of the gospel; full of works of charity and mercy to the sick and poor; neither have I seen or heard anything of her unbecoming the profession of the gospel."

Upham, the historian of the Salem witchcraft, says of Mrs. Bradbury: "The position as well as character and age of Mary (Perkins) Bradbury, entitled her to the highest consideration in the structure of society at that time. This is recognized in the title Mrs. Uniformly given her. She had been noted through life for energy, business capacity, and influence: her husband Thomas Bradbury had been a prominent character in the colony for more than fifty years."

The character of the evidence used against Mrs. Bradbury may be judged by the following: "The deposition of William Carr, who testifieth and saith that about thirteen years ago, presently after some difference that happened to be between my honored father, Mr. George Carr, and Mrs. Bradbury, the prisoner at her bar, upon a Sabbath at noon, as we were riding home by the house of Capt. Thomas Bradbury, I saw Mrs. Bradbury go into her gate, turn the corner of, and immediately there darted out of her gate a blue boar, and darted at my fathers horses legs which made him stumble; but I saw it no more. And my father said, "Boys, what did you see?" And we both said, "A blue boar!" This venerable woman was about eighty years of age when she was arrested for the crime of bewitching John Carr so that he became crazed and prematurely died. The testimony of William Carr at the trial, went to show that his brother fell in love with Jemima True, but the proposed match being opposed and broken off by the father of young Carr, on account of his youth, he became melancholy and at times insane. He further stated that he was with his brother and cared for him in his last sickness, and that his brother died peaceably and quietly, and never spoke anything to the harm of Mrs. Bradbury or anybody else.

Mrs. Bradbury was defended by Major Robert Pike. She was convicted with four others who were executed September, 1692. Mrs. Bradbury escaped punishment, but by what means, does not appear.

From Wikipedia

Mary (née Perkins) Bradbury (baptized September 3, 1615 - December 20, 1700) was tried, convicted and sentenced to hang as a witch in Salem, Massachusetts in 1692. However, she managed to evade sentence until the trials had been discredited, and died in 1700, aged 85.

Mary Perkins was daughter of John and Judith (née Gater) Perkins, baptized in 1615, at Warwickshire, England. Her family immigrated to America in 1631, sailing on the LYON from Bristol. In 1636 she married Thomas Bradbury of Salisbury, Massachusetts, considered one of its most distinguished citizens, land agent for his great-uncle Ferdinando Gorges and son of Elizabeth Whitgift, whose uncle John Whitgift was Archbishop of Canterbury under Elizabeth and James.

In the notorious witch trials of 1692, Mary Bradbury was indicted for (among other charges):

Certaine Detestable arts called Witchcraft & Sorceries Wickedly Mallitiously and felloniously hath used practiced and Exercised At and in the Township of Andivor in the County of Essex aforesaid in upon & against one Timothy Swann of Andivor In the County aforesaid Husbandman - by which said Wicked Acts the said Timothy Swann upon the 26th day of July Aforesaid and divers other days & times both before and after was and is Tortured Afflicted Consumed Pined Wasted and Tormented.Witnesses testified that she assumed animal forms; her most unusual metamorphosis was said to have been that of a blue boar. Another allegation was that she cast spells upon ships. Over a hundred of her neighbors and townspeople testified on her behalf, but to no avail and she was found guilty of practicing magic and sentenced to be executed. Through the ongoing efforts of her friends, her execution was delayed. After the witch debacle had passed, she was released. By some accounts she was allowed to escape. Others claim she bribed her jailer. Another account claims that her husband bribed the jailer and took her away to Maine in a horse and cart. They returned to Massachusetts after the witch hysteria had died down. Mary Bradbury died of natural causes in her own bed in 1700, aged 85.

Her family friend, and her son-in-law's father, Major Robert Pike, was in command of all the forces of Norfolk County, Massachusetts Bay Colony and those located in present-day Maine. As early as 1650 he was what would now be called a trial justice and in 1672 an associate judge of the courts of Norfolk Co. In political life a member of the General Court when 32 and of the Governor's Council from 1682-96, when having reached the age of 50 years he retired to the private life of the farm.

Mary Perkins Bradbury and Thomas Bradbury had eleven children:

Wymond Bradbury (1637-1669), married Sarah Pike, daughter of Major Robert Pike

Judith Bradbury (1638-1700), married Caleb Moody

Thomas Bradbury (1640-1718)

Mary Bradbury (1642-1724), married John Stanyan

Jane Bradbury (1645-1729), married Henry True

Jacob Bradbury (1647-1669), died in Barbados

Wilbur Fay handled the northeast route for ice deliveries and also delivered groceries from the Bear Island store on Lake Winnipesaukee.

According to Fred Bulkley, "Ice was cut from the lake in the winter, covered with sawdust and stored in the big ice house at the shore line. It was my job to haul the 300 pound blocks of ice from the ice house and saw them into 75 pound pieces which sold at 50 cents each, delivered. The ice route ran four days a week in the morning, along northwest Bear and Pine and to the Beaver Islands in the afternoon. The Merrills' nephew, Wilbur Fay, handled the northeast route and also delivered groceries from the store."

Source: "Bear Island Reflections" published by Bear Island Conservation Association, Lake Winnipesaukee, New Hampshire 1989.

In the early 1940's, Wilbur bought the Ice House on Smith's Cove, and opened Fay's Boat Yard which is one of the largest on Lake Winnipesaukee today (Aug 2000).
